In addition to yearly releases, a variety of special edition Nike Dunks SB have been featured. In March of 2004 Nike released the Nike Dunk SB collection, due to the increased popularity of skateboarding in California.

Skateboarding becomes popular in the 1990s, leading to improvements in skate shoes. Loud, blocky skate shoes seem to no longer welcomed as the hip-hop culture of the 1990s eventually died out. In the late 1990s, Nike started to experiment with the market by reissuing older models.In 2002, after failing to gain share in the skateboard market, Nike came out with the SB brand for skateboarding. After the Dunks did not sell well, they released four other models. They signed Paul Rodriguez to provide credibility for the brand, while making limited release shoes in partnership with Slam City Skates and Supreme.
Nike SB sponsors pro skaters such as Theotis Beasley, Lewis Marnell, Lance Mountain,and Omar Salazar. Because of this the Nike Dunk SB Low Pro SB Tiffany remain a hot commodity and difficult to find.Nike SB released their first video entitled "Nothing But The Truth" in 2007. The video consisted of all the Nike SB Pros, Ams and some of the Flow riders. In 2009, Nike SB gave rider Stefan Janoski his own pro model (aptly named the Zoom Stefan Janoski SB), and signed Eric Koston who had earlier in the year left Lakai Footwear. In addition, a video featuring the Nike SB Amateur team was released later in the year. As one of the most popular and anticipated of the collection, demand exceeded supply.
